Opinions of Remington Model 700 in 300 Win Mag

They have one at a local gunstore for 499. I'm not sure the exact model but it is a 700 with a detachable magazine. I am looking for opinions on the gun, the price, and the caliber.

Currently I don't own a centerfire rifle, with the exception of an SKS, so I am looking to add one to the arsenal.

I really can't imagine anyone could say much bad about a remington 700 or 300 Win mag round.

You might want to compare a comparable Savage model. They have been making some really good bolt guns. Accurate and priced right. Off the top of my head $499 for a Rem 700 doesn't sound to bad.

Pro: lock time is about as good as it gets

Con: no rear bolt lock-up, the only locking lugs are at the front of the bolt at the breach

I agree with the choice of Savage, it's a great value.

Fine cartridge, fine rifle. Recoil right at the edge of pain threshold. Hire someone else to shoot it for you.

You can find plenty of rifles in that caliber on the USED rack in any local gunshop...especially right after hunting season ends.

I've owned several Remington 700's in a variety of calibers, everything from .223 through 300 Win. Mag and 7mm Remington Mag. Other than a safety switch problem on my .308 Win. (which nearly killed me) and a broken extractor on a .223, they've been OK rifles - reasonably accurate and fairly reliable. I think the weak-point in the Rem. 700 design is the extractor, but the reports of recent quality control slipping from the factory make me wonder if they are still the rifle they once were.
Having said that, I'm FAR more of a Tikka T3 fan at this point - I will NEVER buy another Remington while Tikka is still available for roughly the same price, with (in my opinion) superior accuracy and workmanship. Most people don't like the Tikka plastic bolt shroud and magazines, but I have NEVER had ANY problem with a TIkka and they've all been SUPERB tackdrivers with ZERO malfunctions or glitches of any kind! Just my .02

P.S. - I agree with SilverCity about the caliber, I've had ENOUGH of the magnum calibers for one lifetime - a decent .308, .30-06, or (better yet) 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser will do anything on the north american continent that the magnums will do, without the pain and expense of the magnums.

Old diehard Remington fan here. Recently bought the wife a Tikka T3 Lite in .223...fine shooter and she loves it.

Thanks for the replies, this store also sells Tikka rifles but I didn't look to closely since I had never even heard of them. I will check them out when I go back, I am also going to check around for Savages as well since I have never heard anything bad about them and they are cheaper. I may end up going the 30-06 or .308 route as well I am not to set on the caliber, I just want something that will reach out and touch a target if need be. Thanks again for the responses.
